Motorola Mobility Invests In HTML5 Game Developer And Publisher Moblyng
Via its venture arm, Motorola Mobility has made an investment in Moblyng, the game developer and publisher of cross-platform, HTML5-based games. Joining Motorola in the investment round are Mohr Davidow Ventures and Deep Fork Capital. The investment could have been part of this recent filing, which indicated that Moblyng raised $7.5 million out of a $10.9 million round. It appears that Motorola Mobility is not publicly disclosing the amount of the investment. Moblyng games, which have been downloaded more than 9 million times, are developed for and published on Android, Facebook, iOS and WebOS platforms. Originally, the startup focused on building a slideshow creation tool, FlipTrack but in May 2008 decided to change its name to Moblyng and shift to cross-platform game development.

Skyfire 3 for iPhone released, Flash video playback improved
Skyfire 3 for iPhoneSkyfire for iPhone, the browser that shot to fame at the end of 2010 thanks to its ability to play Flash video, has now reached version 3. The most notable change, if you’re using Skyfire to play Flash video on your iPhone, is that Skyfire now works with more sites, and transcoded video has been further optimized to save your bandwidth, and thus money.

The new version features even more Facebook integration, with the Facebook Like button now appearing at the bottom of every page you visit. There’s also one-touch access to your entire Facebook feed — and a new feature called ‘Fireplace Feed Reader’ that parses Facebook for links, images and videos posted by your friends.

The new features, in fact, very closely match Skyfire 3 for Android, which was released in November last year.

iPad users can also download the new version, but it’s probably wiser to wait for the iPad-specific app, which should be updated to version 3 in due course.

Microsoft Security Essentials vulnerability reminds that security risks are everywhere
Microsoft recently delivered a patch for its malware and antivirus tools, including Security Essentials, Windows Defender, MSRT, and Forefront — its enterprise antivirus solution. The patch addresses a flaw in Microsoft’s scanning engine which could allow an attacker who had a valid username and password to gain elevated rights on a system.

As is often the case with these flaws, the fact that the attacker has valid credentials is arguably a bigger problem than the vulnerability itself. However, there’s an important takeaway: at any time, any program on your computer could be putting you at risk. Even your antivirus or anti-malware app.

It’s important (and imperative) to keep your operating system and apps as up-to-date as possible. It also helps to know what other programs you can use to ensure your system is safe. Free Windows programs like Secunia PSI — which scans your system for vulnerable programs — and Returnil’s System Safe — which lets you complete roll back changes to your computer, including those made by malware — can be a big help in locking down your system.

Barnes & Noble licenses Alex e-reader patents from Spring Design, settles dispute
You can now tack on one more footnote to the end of the Alex e-reader story — Spring Design has finally settled its longstanding dispute with Barnes & Noble, and granted the company a “non-exclusive, paid-up royalty free license for the entire portfolio of Spring Design patents and patent applications.” Terms of the settlement are otherwise confidential, with Barnes & Noble only saying that it is “pleased to add Spring Design’s patents and patent applications as a complementary addition to our rapidly growing digital portfolio.” Head on past the break for the short and sweet official press release.

Motorola Xoom Designed for Heavy Meddling
Unlike its arch-rival, the Apple iPad, the Motorola Xoom tablet is easy to open up for repairs and upgrades. “It appears Motorola built the Xoom to be upgraded, so they have this parting line about an inch from the top on the back that lets you separate the device into two pieces,” Miroslav Djuric, who tore down the Xoom for iFixit, told TechNewsWorld.

Groupon launches Gaopeng.com coupon site in China
With a population of more than 1.3 billion people, getting your app launched inside China’s borders could be a very good thing for business. That’s what Groupon thinks, too, and its new China spin-off Gaopeng.com aims to bring local deals to connected Chinese users.

Estimates peg the number of Internet users in China at around half a billion. Groupon will be fighting for market share with other group buying services, and it has apparently partenered with Tencent — which develops China’s most popular instant messaging app QQ — to get Gaopeng off and running.

Competitors aren’t totally thrilled with Groupon’s arrival, and not just because there’s another deal site in China. Groupon has been accused of poaching staff — and competitors have firmly stated that employees who leave for Grouon will not be welcomed back.
